It includes a 4 page article about my works and my passion for violent hard core punk music within the french context of the late 80's until now.
The drawing used for the cover was inspired by some manga, used for an unofficial Lip Cream t-shirt designed and screen printed at two copies back in 1991, old stuff...

Definitely a cool place to hang out on week-end evenings if you happen to visit Metro Manila.

Manila Signings - Comics Odyssey

After a two months hiatus, think its time to update this blog a little bit...
Here's a few pictures from the First signing at the Comics Odyssey bookstore In Ortigas.
Thanks to the people who came and bought the albums, thanks also to Rowena and Sandy Sansolis for making it possible.

Aside from that, i will be attending the Grand Salon festival in Lyon this week-end, doing a mural painting and presenting some old canvases there. Saturday 14th and Sunday May 15th.

Book Signing in Manila

Can't really update this blog for the moment. But thing is there will be two book signing sessions planned in Metro Manila, Philippines.

First one will be happening at Comics Odyssey, third floor or Robinson's Mall at Ortigas, on Saturday March 26th.
Second one occurs the next week at Sputnik, Cubao X, formerly known as the Marikina Shoe Expo, on Saturday April 2nd.

There will be copies of No Comment and War Songs sold there, unfortunately in very limited supply.

Here's a small vid that was broadcasted on the French TV back in January 16th, even if it lasts 2 minutes and sixteen seconds, it may take some time to load on some computers...

Book Signing

Everything went well, thanks for the people who came for the signature and the Bachi-Bouzouk store owners for making it possible.
I will be attending the Angoulème comics festival this week-end. I'll be signing copies of "No Comment" and "War Songs" at the Glénat stand Saturday from 17h to 20h and Sunday from 14h to16h.

This painting, sizing approximatively 265cm high on 380 wide, was realized within two days in Malmö, Sweden, for the Alt Com independent comics festival. The main theme of the festival was titled "Sex & War", then the content presented dealt mostly with socio-political or gender issues.
That painting is a parodic comment about the Eden Abergil case.

War Songs

War Songs is finally out. Did hit the bookstores shelves last September, Sept 8th to be precise. This book is dull, harsh and monotonous, it's been a deliberate decision as i wanted to depict war stories from a different angle. This is definetely not an action packed war comic. Good thing is the album is selected for the next Angouleme International Comics Festival. If not, this album would have been drowned and thus been totally unnoticed amidst the 1200 ( more or less ) comic-books thrown on the French publishing market between September and December 2010.

Lil' summer illustration work.
This is an artwork for a split seven inch vinyl record featuring two French hardcore bands Strong As Ten and Koenigstein Youth. As both bands are coming from cities with a great industrial past from the 19th century to the late seventies, and both share mutual interest for late 80's "thrash", then i took inspiration from Bernt & Hilla Becher post industrial photo work and mid eighties "splatter-core" bands visuals such as Septic Death, Fear Itself or Negative Gain record covers to get this result.

Finally, i nailed it.
that will be the cover for my upcoming comic book, which is under the presses right now, and will be officially released in bookstores for September 8th to 10th.
Unfortunately, the multinational logos appearing on the camouflage jacket won't be shown on the printed version. To my regret, because i think the drawing loses a lot of its sense and its impact by removing these. This is mainly due to copyright infringement issues and fear of litigation from my publisher, fine with me... After drawing many scenes of murder, rape and torture without any problems as long as my material is aimed at mature readers, it seems i passed close to the ultimate taboo in terms of drawn representation. While corporate logos are polluting our visual environment in public spaces, and while were subjected daily to hundreds of advertising messages, i came to realize we are forbidden as simple citizens or artists to fight back by scratching their image.

The lucky State Poison guys are now boarding a plane going to Japan for a twenty days tour, playing with great local punk bands like Crow, Nightmare, Death Dust Extractor, Isterismo, NK6, Slang, Conga Fury, attack SS, D-Clone, Unarm, System Fucker and lots more i didn't listened to yet or never heard about...

Four pages published in the July issue of "L'echo des Savanes".
Note that the small pictograms i'm generally using in the speech balloons had been replaced by words.
The magazine chief editor feared that the pictograms were way too intricate and confusing for the vast majority of the readers, so he suggested replacing them by single words.
That's a brilliant idea for sure, and i think i will be working in that direction in the near future...

Nevertheless, you can try reading the unaltered version of that complicated, undecipherable little story below.
It was directly inspired by real facts regarding security issues in Iraq.

Suburban Wasteland

Flash back... I stumbled across this old 2005 painting while getting some film developed, and it brought me back a lot of memories, many things did happen in the last five years, and since 2007 and the recent capitalist crisis, be sure our world will never be the same again.
This painting was some sort of commission for a strange project called the "Reverse Cinema", where six different artists were doing a fake cinema poster, then, some people will imagine a scenario and shoot a short film out of it. Ironically, seem that i had been the loser of the bunch, nobody did a short film out of my poster, the painting wasn't hung properly and fell on the street, it was stored somewhere, supposed to be sold and then disappeared forever. These poor quality photos are the only remaining trace of that painting.
Fun fact is that was painted in September 2005, one month before the french ghetto riots erupted...

A short glimpse of the painting appear at 1'21''and 2'17''shot during the opening night.

The book eventually got some press, but i really can't tell if the reviews are positive or negative... Try reading Polish.
The article below was taken from the website Sadurski.com, which is from what i can understand, is a Polish cartoonist / Internet portal & at the same time a publishing company releasing satiric & political cartoon magazines. Displaying the book among a pile of garbage, with used condoms & cigarette butts was quite a fun idea.

Bez komentarza - czyli cała prawda o homo sapiens

Po przeczytaniu tego komiksu ze 100% pewnością złapiecie doła. Nie może być inaczej, jeśli autor Ivan Brun bezlitośnie pokazuje nam ludzką naturę. „Bez komentarza” to chyba najbardziej poruszający z wydanych do tej pory komiksów w Polsce! Okładka może mylić; narysowana twarz młodej kobiety w stylu mangi odstraszy zapewne przeciwników japońskiego komiksu. Na szczęście to tylko zmyłka, w środku mamy europejską kreskę.

Rysownik pochodzi z obszaru komiksu frankofońskiego, przesłaniem jednak, bliżej mu do rysunków amerykańskiego mistrza undergroundu Roberta Crumba. Autor zniekształca ludzkie postacie, powiększając im głowy, resztę zostawia w poprawnych proporcjach, rysuje realistycznie. Może, sugeruje nam tym celowym powiększeniem, że jesteśmy jak lalki, kukiełki, uwikłani w rzeczywistość, gramy jak nam karzą niewidoczni „władcy marionetek”?

Twórca (rocznik 1971) jest absolwentem ASP w Lyonie, poza tworzeniem komiksów śpiewał w hardcorowej grupie Coche Bomba. Publikował często pornograficzne historie obrazkowe w licznych zinach. Komiksy zebrane w albumie „Bez komentarza” były wcześniej w większości publikowane w miesięczniku „L`Echo des Savanes”. Wszystkie historie są pozbawione tekstu. Rysunki klarownie i dosadnie opowiadają nam ludzką wegetację. Przez to, że autor celowo nie komentuje opowieści, zyskują na sile i dają do myślenia długo po zamknięciu i odłożeniu albumu na półkę. Gdyby jakiś obcy w rodzaju ET przejrzał ten komiks stwierdziłby, że ludzie nadają się tylko do najcięższych robót w kopalniach uranu. Homo sapiens nie reprezentują ani jednej zalety, to chodzące potworki pełne zawiści, złości, pożądania. Undergroundowy rysownik przedstawia narkomanię, debilistyczne media ze swoimi kolejnymi odmianami Big Brothera, umierające środowisko, skorumpowaną i gnijącą władzę, egoistyczne podejście bliźnich do siebie. Czasem zamiast słowa artysta używa w dymku powszechnie zrozumiałych symboli. Ivan Bruno tym otwierającym nam szeroko oczy komiksem bez ogródek wystawia same jedynki na świadectwie współczesnej ludzkości. Jak napisał T.S. Eliot w swoim wierszu "Wydrążeni ludzie:

No Comment's Polish edition, published by Kultura Gniewu back in July 2009.
This was an enhanced version compared to the original edition with some extra pages and illustrations. Despite being a wordless comic book, they took care of translating the few remaining words and letterings in Polish, great job!

No offense for U.S. citizens there, but, as far as i remember, the slandering campaign against France led by some U.S. and British media back in 2002/2003 was really funny too...

Inner Sleeve.

Illustrations for the next Coche Bomba lp called "Vectores de la Muerte" ( does it really means something? ) which
had been recorded back in 2002 before being released this year.
It should take the form of a double folded cover, quite unusual way for a record packaging. The thing will be printed and pressed for November.
Here's a short promotional text:

"Six years after the last studio session from Coche Bomba, the two fellas from Etoile Renoi & Raoul Prod. decided to unearth, remix and remaster the recording,
to press it on vinyl and wrap it up in a beautiful double folded sleeve. A different way to say punk is not completely dead... At last its corpse's still moving...

Coche Bomba were five jerks from Lyon starting playing fast, violent and distorted Hardcore Punk at the beginning of the Nineties.
Not that they were ahead of their time, but their quirky sound, machine-gun drumming, odd tempo changes, were not that common by French standards back then...
Instead of following trends or imitating bands, Coche Bomba rather developped its personal musical approach.
Lyrics, alternatively sung in French, English and Spanish dealt mostly with socio-political issues...
Despite being unappreciated and misunderstood in their early years, the band managed to gain recognition in the European H/C scene from the 90s.

After spewing out many different records gathered on the discography CD "5 years of trash guerilla", after a two-month tour in South America, and a farewell gig

Poster for my next painting exhibition.
The thing will be held in Poitiers, hometown of the Fanzinothèque, a place which collects and files fanzines from all over the world since 1990.

The exhibit will be focused on an adaptation of Aldous Huxley s "Brave New World" updated by the Terrenoire collective.

The opening is planned for October 25th, and that will be a good opportunity for me to lay some noise in public.

Polaco Scalerandi and Gaston Souto from the crazy Lule Le Lele team, Julian Sequeira, Gustavo Sala, and many more that i forgot to mention...

Yes, we do really use those oversaturated colors... Fun to do at the very moment we're painting it, but it makes me want to puke when seeing the result a few months afterwards.

Same story adapted in a comic page that should be published next month in the Underground/Indie Rock magazine "Abus Dangereux".
Despite the commemoration of May '68 forty years anniversary, this is just a reminder to the young generations that it's much better and reasonable to leave the decisions about their future to the elders and the ruling class... Got the message kids?

The story -board...

This work is a bit different than what i'm usually doing.
It's for a 24 pages comics story that will be executed by eight different persons.
I took inspiration from John Buscema for the physical features and the excessive theatrical poses of the characters, even if the overall aspect is still stiff and static in the end...
Each artist have to draw a segment of four pages. Guess the final result will be quite unusual, as the artists involved in the project have very different techniques and graphic approach...
Should be published next month.

Done the August 12th in an open air rock festival.

Those angry garden gnomes keeping vigil could epitomize the latest European politics regarding illegal immigration.
from Wikipedia: The first garden gnomes were made in the town of Gräfenroda in Thuringia, Germany in the mid-1800s by Phillip Griebel. Griebel made terracotta animals as decorations and created the gnome based on local myths as a way for people to enjoy the stories of the gnomes' willingness to help in the garden at night. The garden gnome quickly spread across Germany and into France and England, and wherever gardening was a serious hobby. Gnome manufacture spread across Germany with numerous other large and small manufacturers coming into and out of the business, each one having its own particular style of design. World War II was hard on the industry and most producers gave up then. Griebel's descendants still make them and are the last of the German producers, all others having moved production to Poland or China.

Due to its numerous material contingencies, painting is a leisure more suitable for rich or retired people. Using the facilities and empty spaces from squatts was a good way to bypass the problem of renting.
Discarded blue plastic sheets were used to cover a thick layer of grease and used oil left on the floor.

The Final white strokes had been added.

That "Still Life" was elaborated from a broken car stereo and a rubber doll whose belly had been opened up with a boxcutter. it was a attempt to give a more contemporary approach of that subject. I noticed this canvas in particular tends to scare off the ladies, go figure...
It Sizes 85x130 centimeters, done in 1995 in the garage of a squatted basement which had been demolished since to be replaced by a municipal police station.

Nostalgia again...
This painting had been done back in 1994 with the Organic Comix collective in a street animation organized by the Tony Garnier Urban Museum as a commemoration to the famous architect.
That piece sizes 10 meters long by two meters wide and had been painted within 4 hours, pictures took at different stages of its elaboration.
Unfortunately, the final result hadn't been documented and the wood panels had been destroyed in a house demolition five years ago.

Seems things are changing drastically regarding freedom of speech in our beautiful country of milk and honey.
After Rap bands being sued for lyrics dealing in bad terms with the national police forces, it's time for a cartoonist to meet the justice for a drawing depicting a cop face with a strangely looking pig nose.
No big deal you may think, but it raises some interesting questions for the years to come: Who will guard the guardians? Are we quiting a fake democracy to enter a soft dictatorship?

The magazine where i published my recent works had been closed by the media giant Lagardère Active Media last December. Seems now there's little or almost no room to express different opinions within the mainstream media.
